Abstract

1376691 Photo-electric key switches INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 24 Nov 1972 [1 Dec 1971] 54317/72 Heading G1A [Also in Divisions B6 and H4] A photo-electric push-button switch comprises a body having two crossing light channels and a resiliently mounted key in the form of a cover movable from one position in which the channels are cleared to a second position in which the channels are closed. As shown, Fig. 1, the body 1 is of opaque plastics material and has two crossing channels 2, 3 which may be filled with a transparent plastics material or glass, for light beams extending between respective sources and detectors (not shown). The cover 4 is retained by pins 8, 9 which snap into bores 10 in the body and is biased by means of a spring 5 located by means of a recess 6 in the body and a projection 7 on the cover. When depressed the skirt of the cover obscures the ends of the channels to interrupt the light beams. A plurality of such switches can be mounted on a common base-plate by means of lugs 11 to form a co-ordinate array with appropriate light beams passing through each row and column of switches for a business machine e.g. typewriter or calculator keyboard or as a telephone keyboard.
