Abstract

1376515 Rotary I C engines NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 3 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 45537/72 Headings F1B and F1F A trochoidal-type rotary piston internal combustion engine has a sparking plug 25 controlled by an ignition system such that, during deceleration of the shaft rotation, the plug 25 alternately fires and misfires. The ignition system comprises a D.C. source 30 which is connected via switch 31 with ignition coils 32, 33 having primary and secondary windings 35, 36 and 38, 39. The primary windings 35, 36 are connected to breakers 45, 46 operated by cam 48 on a shaft 49 which rotates at half the speed of engine drive shaft 16. Condensers 56, 57 are connected in parallel with breakers 45, 46. Secondary coils 38, 39 are connected to rotary electrodes 41, 42 of a distributer 43 which also has stationary electrodes 61, 62 connected to plug 25 and earth respectively. Inserted between switch 31 and coil 33 is a further switch 65 operated by rod 69 attached to a diaphragm of a unit 68 communicating with the engine inlet manifold 66. If engine 10 is used in a vehicle, then deceleration increases the vacuum in manifold 66 and rod 69 moves to open switch 65. Thus opening of breaker 46 by cam 48 does not produce firing of plug 25 which thus alternately fires and misfires compared with normal operation. Instead of a single switch 65 being used, two parallel switches can be employed, one functioning like switch 65 and the other being controlled by a switch governed by a magneto driven by the main shaft of the engine Fig. 2 (not shown). In this case the vehicle must be running at a predetermined high speed, as well as decelerating, if the desired misfiring is to be effected. A single ignition coil and rotary electrode may be used Fig. 3 (not shown).
