Abstract

1411716 Ignition systems BRUNSWICK CORP 26 Jan 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 4191/73 Heading F1B To ensure operation in the forward direction only, e.g. of a two stroke I.C. engine for outboard motors, utilizing a capacitor discharge ignition system of the breakerless type, the system includes two series-arranged SCR switches 8,20 triggered by pulses from first and second pulse generators 16, 17 and arranged so that only when the engine rotates in the forward direction will the pulse from the generator 17 render switch 20 conducting to allow the subsequent pulse from generator 16 to actuate switch 8 and allow the capacitor 3 to discharge through the primary coil 9 at the usual pulse transformer 5 to fire selectively the sparking plugs 2. Attempted reverse rotation of the engine will produce a pulse from the pulse generator 16 before SCR switch 20 is conducting, and hence this will block the pulse, preventing discharge of the capacitor. As shown, the pulse generators are formed, as an alternator 12 including an enginedriven rotor 13 carrying a pair of permanent magnets 14, and a pair of windings 16, 17 close coupled by separate cores 18. 19 to the magnets. The direction sensing winding 17 is connected in series with a blocking diode 25, and both are in series with a holding capacitor 27. A clamping diode 24 limits the maximum voltage applied across the gate-cathode circuit of the SCR switch 8, and transient protection capacitors 22, 23 are provided on opposite sides of a gate resistor 21.
