Abstract

1376513 Marine seismic prospecting IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 July 1973 [14 Sept 1972] 42691/72 Heading H4D In marine seismic prospecting, a mantle of gas is provided in the water zone adjacent and above the explosive seismic source to attenuate or scatter upwardly-travelling pressure waves which would otherwise be reflected strongly at the water surface and confuse the record of desired rock structure reflection or refraction signals. The invention is particularly useful when the water is covered by ice. In the embodiments described the source and a hydrophone streamer are towed by a submarine craft. The gas is provided in the form of either(i) bubbles released from perforated pipes to form a mantle over the source, (ii) a domed sheet of closed-cell foamed plastics material, or (iii) a volume of gas (e.g. from an exploded charge) trapped below an inverted vessel. The source preferably is a length of detonating fuse-cord.
