Abstract
1415706 Seismic prospecting IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 May 1974 [24 July 1973] 35104/73 Heading H4D In a method of seismic prospecting of an area under ice-covered water, seismic waves are generated by detonating a linear explosive charge suspended substantially vertically in the water at a sufficient depth below the ice to avoid breakage of the ice by the explosion. Embodiments described use PETN detonating cord as the charge, which has a weight on its lower end and is supported by the wires of an electrical detonator taped to the upper end of the charge. Geophones are linearly arranged on top of the ice, and shot holes through the ice are at intervals to give six-fold record stacking. Examples of charge lengths, depths and explosive loadings are given. The depth is preferably sufficient to avoid significant flexure of the ice, and the length sufficient that the gas bubble formed cannot oscillate as a sphere: hence spurious wave generation is minimized.
