Abstract

A ship (11) follows a seismic exploration route and surveys an underground formation below a water layer (13). Behind the ship is trailed a cable (17) carrying a linear, horizontal arrangement of seismic energy sources (14, 15, 16,...) and surface floats (18, 19, 29,..). A streamer bearing hydrophones is also trailed behind the boat. Ideally the first hydrophone is positioned directly opposite the centre of the energy source arrangement. A surface buoy permits the precise determination of the positional relationship between the streamer and the energy source. The energy sources, which may conveniently be air guns of known type, transmit broadband seismic impulses. The wavelength of the lowest frequency is less than that of either the energy source or the hydrophone streamer.
