Abstract

1376359 Electrostatic printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 31 Oct 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 50057/72 Heading G2H In an electrostatic printer using cascade developer the developer mix is continuously sampled by a device 51 which feeds it to the top of a vertical column 53 having a shutter valve 57 associated with the lower end thereof. A lamp 59 is directed to project a beam through a window 55 in the column 53 and reflective from the mix passing down the column is received by a photo-sensitive transducer 61 which passes a signal to a logic 63 for passage to a logic 79 where it is compared with a signal from the same transducer but derived from another source. This other source is a segment 65, on a rotating disc, which is caused to pass into the beam from the lamp 59. Four segments are associated with the disc all of such reflective property that each represents a standard acceptable developer mix. Measurement from a particular segment is chosen through actuation of a switch 183 the passage of the chosen segment across the window causing actuation of a switch 75. The logic 79 switches on toner replenishment device if the mix is deficient in toner. Whilst the actual measurements are being taken flow of the sample mix material down the column 53 is prevented by closure of the valve 57.
