Abstract
1376163 Making battery plate grids JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 14 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 12328/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division H1] A method of making a battery plate grid 11 comprises blanking a strip of grid material to form a preformed grid having a rectangular framework of substantially the same dimensions as that of the finished grid and a plurality of strands 14 defining a lattice structure having dimensions in a direction perpendicular to a plane parallel with the rectangle defined by the framework less than those of the lattice structure in the finished grid, and displacing the strands in a direction perpendicular to said plane to increase the lattice dimensions in said plane to those required in the finished grid. The preformed grid is blanked from a strip of dispersion strengthened lead, which may be pre-shaped to define ribs 12 and/or one pair of parallel frame members. The grid material may alternatively be a lead alloy, e.g.lead-antimony, lead-calcium. The ribs and strands may be coined during the displacing operation to reshape them into a rhomboidal or triangular cross-section, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). These sections provide keying regions for the active material of the battery plate. The displacement of the strands allows the grid to retain a larger volume of active material than a flat grid of the same weight.
