Abstract
1376131 Mixing apparatus NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 Feb 1972 [9 Feb 1971 4 Nov 1971] 4266/71 and 51343/71 Heading B1C [Also in Division C6] Tissue-cell culture apparatus includes a container for culture medium which encloses a compact cell support of a flexible strip material formed into turns which are spaced one from another to provide a passageway through which cells and medium can travel progressively on rotary movement of the support during inoculation. The strip material may be of polypropylene, oriented polystyrene treated by corona discharge to give a hydrophilic surface, unplasticised polyesters, aluminised polymers, stainless steel or aluminium, being materials exhibiting good cell adhesion, low toxicity, high strength, low weight, low cost, ready availability and a specified minimum surface tension. The support 10, Figs. 1 and 2, may take the form of a roll of polymeric material, the turns of which are spaced apart by two narrow corrugated strips 11, 12 one at each end of the roll. Spacing of the ends of the film from the surface of the neighbouring layer is assisted by the inclusion of two corrugated strips 13, 14 arranged along the length of the roll. The limbs of four L-shaped ribs 8, 9, serve to space the cell support within the culture vessel 1. The vessel is formed from two generally cylindrical portions 6, 7 of polystyrene joined at their rims by waterproof tape. The ports 2, 3 and 4 for culture medium, gas (CO 2 /air mixture) and exhaust, respectively, are closed by screw-threaded caps. The gas inlet port 3 communicates with a sparge tube 5. In a further construction, the vessel is enclosed with a gaspermeable plastics (specified) membrane 28, Fig. 9, protected by a ¥-inch plastics mesh work 35 and includes an elastomeric septum (34 on Fig. 8, not shown) through which cells grown on the support may be inoculated with virus.
