Abstract

1375964 Controlling shearing machines WILKINS & MITCHELL Ltd 9 Feb 1972 [9 Feb 1971] 4297/71 Heading B3W [Also in Division G1] To determine the length and/or weight per unit length of a substantially uniform elongate member 12, e.g. a metal billet, it is placed on a table 10 with one end 13 in a predetermined position, the table 10 being supported by two supports S1 S2 only, with the reaction r1 of one support acting through said predetermined position and the distance d between the supports greater than the greatest expected length l of a member 12, the loads r1, r2 on the supports are measured, and from the loads and the distance d the length l and/or the weight per unit length w is calculated, e.g. by an electronic computer. A retractable stop 11 facilitates positioning of the end 13 of the member 12. If a billet is to be sheared into pieces of known weight for use, e.g. in forging, the weight per unit length is fed to the shear (not shown) and a back stop is adjusted automatically to give pieces of the desired weight. The stop 11 is retracted to allow the billet to be fed to the feed table of the shear.
