Abstract

1,098,446. Subdivision by weight. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Sept. 28, 1966 [July 28, 1965], No. 32336 / 65. Heading G1W. The method of subdividing an elongate member of substantially uniform weight per unit length according to Specification 1, 065, 021 can be modified when the member is substantially of predetermined length by supporting the member at points spaced a distance E apart with one end abutting a stop spaced a distance D from the more remote support so that the other end projects a distance #D therebeyond, the distance #D being chosen to be sufficiently small so that the weight per unit length W of the member may be calculated approximately without taking account of that distance and then measuring the reaction at one support point only due to the weight of the member and calculating approximately the weight per unit length from a knowledge of this force and the spacings E and D.
