Abstract

1375923 Electrostatic printing RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT LABORATORIES OF OHNO CO Ltd 11 Feb 1972 [12 Feb 1971 29 March 1971] 6604/72 Heading G2H A photo-sensitive electrostatic printing plate, composed of an electrically-conductive porous or finely-apertured substrate 3 and a photoconductive hydrophobic surface layer 4 which does not block the pores or apertures in the surface of the substrate, is imaged by exposure to light and developed by application of a water-based ink through the back of the plate. Where no electrostatic latent image is present, the ink fails to reach the plate surface, but electricallycharged areas add their effect to that of developing electrode 27, and cause the ink to fill the apertures 5 and stand proud of the plate surface for transfer to paper 26. The plate may be cylindrical, or part of an endless band, and ink may be fed to it by rollers, or by an ink pool in the interior of a rotating cylinder. The substrate 3 may be photo-etched copper, coated with selenium or with a mixture of photo-conductive material and resin, and a layer of hydrophobic material may be applied over one of photoconductive material. Lists of resins and ink components are given.
