1375785 Electro-chemical analysis H FREISER H J JAMES G D CARMACK B M KNEEBONE and R W CATTRALL 30 March 1972 [19 Jan 1972] 15128/72 Heading G1N A "solid state" ion selective electrode comprises a conducting wire coated with a molecular dispersion of an ionic material in an insulating polymer. This may be a solution or colloidal dispersion in the polymer. The ion exchange material may be an ion exchange resin and may contain any measurable ion or group of ions. Extensive lists are given of ionic materials and polymeric materials, and plasticizers. CONSTRUCTION. Fourteen examples are given of electrodes and responses. Typically the electrode might consist of a Pt. wire dipped in a solution of P.V.C. in cyclohexanone, and when the resulting film is nearly dry it is dipped in a solution of the ionic material, or the P.V.C./ cyclohexanone solution may be mixed with a solution of the ionic complex in decanol. Alternatively the Pt. wire may be coated with polystyrene from a chloroform solution and when dry soaked in chlorosulphonic acid for five minutes and after washing in a solution of the cation of interest e.g. CuSO 4 for copper.
