Abstract

1375703 Packaging machines/conveyers BAKER PERKINS DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 4 May 1972 [8 Feb 1971] 4189/71 Headings B8C and B8A In a packaging apparatus, filled bags 2 in a group are mutually overlapped to fit in a carton 6 and are transferred to the carton by suction heads 20 carried by manifolds 21. The bags 2 are supplied to pockets (14, Fig. 2), arranged in sawtooth fashion across a conveyer 1, so that the bags are inclined with the lower edge of one bag being positioned beneath the upper end of the adjacent bag. The bags are deflected into the pockets (14) by pivotal arms 11 mounted above a conveyer 4 delivering the bags to the conveyer 1 from a bagging machine. At the downstream end of the conveyer 1, two rows of bags are picked up by the suction heads 20 and placed in the carton 6 which is carried by a conveyer 8. The manifolds 22 are pivoted to pivotal arms (26, 27, Fig. 2) which are of unequal lengths so that the spacing between the gripper rows is greater above the conveyer 1 than above the carton 6. Thus the bags in each group placed in the carton are overlapped in two directions.
