Abstract

1375561 Electrostatic inking DRG PACKAGING Ltd 15 March 1972 [16 March 1971] 7022/71 Heading B6C A printing plate 10 has an image defined by areas of electrically conductive and non-conductive material, produced by, for example, stencilling, and is inked by production of an electrostatic charge on the non-conductive areas, charging of ink droplets or toner particles to the same sign, so that they are repelled from the charged areas of the plate, and bringing of the droplets or particles into proximity with the plate. The developed image so formed is then transferred to a receiving surface, such as web 54, either by contact or electrostatically. Preferably the plate is carried by a rotary cylinder 18, and is inked by passage of charged ink droplets parallel to its moving surface and at the same speed, the droplets being propelled either by entrainment in an airstream or by spraying. An electric or magnetic field may be used to make the droplets, or similarly entrained particles, travel in a curve, parallel to the plate surface, and to cause uncharged droplets or particles to separate.
