Abstract

1375427 Projectile launcher; cartridges M B ASSOCIATES 23 Aug 1972 [14 Jan 1972] 39325/72 Headings F3C and F3A A projectile launcher comprises a barrel 20, Figs. 1 and 2, a hinged breech assembly 24 and a handle assembly 22. The barrel 20 receives a cartridge 12 therein and is provided with rifling grooves 26. The handle assembly 22 is rotatably connected to the barrel by a collar 28, is locked by a mechanism having a release pin 34, and has a passage 38 with a piston 40 therein, the latter being urged by a spring 42. An axially extending slot 44 extends radially from the passage 38 to the outer periphery of the handle 22 and includes a circumferentially extending cocking slot portion 46 and a loading slot portion 47. A radially extending operating knob 48 is connected to the piston 40 and extends through the slot 44. The spring rate of the spring 42 is so related to the distance between the cocking slot portion 46 and the loading slot portion 47 to ensure complete rupture of a gas bottle 104, Fig. 4, positioned in the cartridge 12, when firing is effected. The latter has a cartridge case 54 and has a projectile 100, which comprises a cloth container having shot particles therein and being deformable to facilitate insertion into a passage 70, a gas check member 96 which functions as a piston, a piercing element 86 carried by a member 78, a gas check member 102 and an adaptor 108 which is retained by a paper sticker 110. In modifications the gas bottle 104 may be replaced by a longer bottle, the adaptor 108 being removed, the cartridge may be provided with two bottles, and a seal may be provided between the bottle and the member 78, the seal being cup-shaped, ring-shaped, wedge-shaped or being a rolling diaphragm type.
