Abstract

1375190 Fermentation apparatus STANDARD OIL CO 28 Oct 1971 [30 Oct 1970] 20558/74 Divided out of 1375189 50198/71 Heading C6F A "bird-cage" cooling element for a fermenter consists of lower and upper headers 120, 121 Fig. 1, axially aligned and having substantially the same mean diameter, two concentric circular arrays of connector pipes 122, 122a connecting the headers, and an inlet and an outlet 123, 124 for the circulation of coolant e.g. liquid ammonia through the element. A pump and compressor located externally of the fermenter may provide for the reliquefying and circulation of varpourized coolant withdrawn through the outlet pipe. The total cross-sectional area of the bores of the connector pipes may substantially equal the crosssectional area of the bore of either header. A gaseous sparger 105, turbine agitator 107 and baffles 106, 106a are provided. Dimensions of the fermenter, headers and connector pipes are given in an Example.
