Abstract
1365577 Tubular heat exchangers WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 23 Oct 1972 [14 Dec 1971] 48685/72 Heading F4S [Also in Division F2] A portion of the liquid being circulated by a centrifugal pump from a pump inlet (13, Fig. 1) to a pump outlet (12), flows through ports (73, 74) in the pump impeller (17) to a chamber 75 disposed above the impeller and encircling the pump shaft 16. From the chamber 75 the liquid passes through the lower part of the shaft seal 68 and ports 71 to the inlet chamber 64 of a heat exchanger compartment 46 in which the liquid is cooled. The chamber 64 is defined by an end wall 58 of the compartment 46 and a plate 65 perforated to uniformly distribute the liquid over coolant coils 63 in the compartment 46. The cooled liquid leaves the compartment 46 via ports 72 of an outlet chamber 67 of generally similar construction to that of the chamber 64, and then flows through the upper part of the shaft seal 69 to the vicinity of the pump bearings which are thereby cooled. The heat exchanger tubes 63 are flat spiral coils separated by spacers 88, Fig. 6, and the ends of the coils terminate in inlet and outlet headers 82, 85 of semi-cylindrical cross-section. 78 denotes a coolant inlet to the header 82. A substantially static body of the liquid being pumped and serving as a heat barrier, is maintained in an annular chamber 45 encircling the heat exchange chamber 46. The chamber 45 which is in communication via a port 89 with the main stream of pumped liquid is subdivided by a plurality of sleeves 91 into layers in order to prevent thermal circulation of the liquid in said barrier.
