Abstract

137,467. Bayes, J. R., and Vautin, C. T. J. May 27, 1919. Sights. - Consists in providing on a machine gun mounting a graduated traverse indicating-plate carrying a device designed, in cooperation with a backsight on the gun and a foresight on a stationary part of the mounting, to serve as a means for enabling the limits of elevation and depression of the gun during searching fire to be indicated. In the form illustrated, as applied to a Vickers-Maxim gun AB, the pivot stem of the cross-head C is mounted in a socket E carried by the tripod H fitted with jamming- handles I. On the head of the socket E is rotatably mounted a graduated traverse indicating- plate a, which may be clamped thereon in any position, and which supports a carrier a<1> upon which is a luminous aiming-point member b adjustable by means of a screw g, and two luminous auxiliary aiming-point members e, f slidable into any positions on the carrier. A peep back sight c on the gun, and a fixed aperture foresight d on the cross-head arm D co-operate with these auxiliary aiming-points to enable the gunner to determine when the gun has reached its limiting positions as it is elevated or depressed by the operation of the elevating-gear F during searching fire. The gear F is fitted with a jamming-bolt G. A clinometer J is provided, fitted wtih a T-bubble for indicating whether the gun is level and to facilitate laying in emergency. A compass tower of known kind is mounted on the traversing-plate a.
