JOSEPH JAMES SPEED, OF VVALTIIAM CROSS, ENGLAND.
SIGHT FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,715, dated April 2, 188.9. Application tiled January '7, 1889. Serial No. 295,640. (No model.) Patented in England October 1, 1887, No. 13,335
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J AMES SPEED, mechanica-l engineer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of XYaltham Cross, England, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Sights for Fire-Arms, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 13,335, bearing date October l, 1887,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to sights for fire-arms.
The use on tire-arms of adjustable back sights or rearsights in combination with fixed fore sights as heretofore practised is objectionable for long ranges, t'or the reason that the soldieror otherperson using the gun must in long-range tiring either raise his head or lower the butt of the gun considerably in order to bring the notch ot the rear sight into the proper position relatively to his eye to enable him to sight or aim the gun. To obviate this inconvenience, instead of employing an adjustable rear sight and a iiXed fore sight, as heretofore, I provide an adjustable fore sight and a fixed rear sight, as hereinafter described-that is to say, I employ a fore sight the height of which can be varied, and a rear sight which is at a convenient height for aiming the gun, and the height ot which is not intended to be varied. Therefore, instead ot t-he butt of the gun having to be moved, the muzzle of the gun must be raised and lowered to suit the range at which the gun is to be tired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan, and Fig. Q a side elevation, of a gun with my improvements applied thereto.
A is the gunstoclt; B, the barrel; C, thereceiver or shoe of the gun; D, the breech-bolt.
My improved fore sight comprises a graduated scale, disk, or dial, a, attached to the gunstock A at a suitable distance in front of the chamber of the gun. It also comprises an arm, l), provided at one end with a pin or stud, c, having a circular head, c, and at its other end with an index or pointer, d. This arm is fitted to turn upon a pivot-pin, e, fixed in the center of the said disk a.
The rear sight which I prefer to employ comprises an arm, f, formed with apeep-hole, f', and pivoted to the receiver or shoe C. This arm is acted upon by a spring, g, which is attached by means of a screw, g', to the receiver or shoe C, and which is provided with a projection adapted to enter one or the other of two notches in the boss of the arm f, and thus retain the said arm either in a horizontal or in a vertical position.
By the means above described the soldier or other person using the nre-arm can in long-range firing sight the object aimed at without having to raise his head or lower the butt of the gun for this purpose.
That I claim isl. A fore sight consisting of a graduated disk mounted at the side of the gun, and a sight-supporting bar pivoted in said disk and having an indicator registering with the graduations on said disk, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a fire-arm, of a fore sight consisting of an arm carrying a suitable sight adj ustably pivoted with respect to a graduated scale or dial, substantially as described, and a rear sight consisting of a pivoted arm having a peep-hole, and a spring to sustain said arm in a IiXed position, substantially as described.
The combination, with a nre-ar1n,ot a tore sight consisting of a dial, a, and a pivoted arm, h, registering therewith and carrying a suitable sight, a rear sight carried by an arm, f, and a spring, g, for supporting said arm in elevated position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
