Abstract

1374574 Stretching films BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd 13 Oct 1971 [21 July 1970] 35302/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division F2] An apparatus for stretching a moving web, e.g. a polythene or polypropylene web which may be heated and drawn through the apparatus by nip rolls, comprises two endless chains which extend along opposite sides of the web (only one shown) and which carry web gripping devices 9 which vary in their separation according to the degree of folding of the chains; each chain link 1 having two spaced guide members 6, 7, one comprising a wheeled carriage 8 continuously engaging a primary guiding rail 10, and the other intermittently engaging a secondary guiding rail 12, e.g. via wheel 11, to control the folding and unfolding of the chain; rotation of the wheeled carriage 8 relative to its guiding rail 10 being prevented by engagement of wheels 14 and 22 with the track. As shown the guide members 6, 7 are the alternate pivotal connections between chain links 1. Each chain is driven by wheels 19 of guide members 7 engaging recesses 21 in the teeth of adjustable driven sprockets 2, 3 (see Division F2). Alternatively (not shown) driving chains having teeth engaging chain links 1 may be used. Carriages 8 attached to guide members 6 ride on guide rails 10 by means of rollers 22 and carry web gripping devices (not shown) on surface 20. The chains travel around sprockets 2, 3 and along the return run in the fully extended state. On leaving sprocket 2 the rollers 11 enter the flared end of a first channel 23 of guide track 12 and the chain is folded as track 12 diverges from track 10. The track 12 terminates at 16 where the chain is fully folded and begins again at 17 to control the extension of chain up to point 18. The web is engaged by the gripping devices where the chain is in the fully folded state and is disengaged after extension of the chain. The chains may diverge in the expanding section 17 to 18 to produce transverse as well as longitudinal stretching of the web. Specifications 936,935; 1,091,971; and 1,371,741 are referred to.
