Abstract

1374517 Vibrators SIMONACCO Ltd 18 Jan 1973 [23 March 1972] 13566/72 Heading F2X A vibrator comprises a housing 12 in which a pair of shafts 15, having fixed out-of-balance masses, are mounted in bearings 16 and carry, adjacent one end of each, driving pinions 17 in engagement with each other. A pulley 19 on one of the shafts 15 is driven via a belt from a motor (not shown). A removable carrier plate 22 is keyed to the end of each shaft 15, a number of weights 23 forming an adjustable out-of-balance mass being removably bolted to each plate 22. Each plate 22 is capable of being mounted on its associated shaft 15 in either of two diametrically opposed positions, one of which is 180 degrees displaced from the position of the fixed out-of-balance mass. Inspection covers 13, 14 at the ends of the housing 12 provide easy access to the weights 23. The housing 12 is of a sealed construction and in use is at least partially filled with a lubricant, filler and drain plugs (24, 25) (Fig. 1, not shown) being provided for this purpose. In use, the shafts 15 rotate in opposite directions, and the fixed out-of-balance masses are 180 degrees out of phase with each other. To reduce the out-of-balance condition the weights 23 can be individually removed until the out-of-balance mass is comprised solely of the fixed portion on the shaft, and the carrier plates 22. A further reduction can then be achieved by removing the carrier plates 22 or by rotating them through 180 degrees so that they are located opposite the fixed portion. With the carrier plates 22 thus disposed and by reapplying one or more of the weights 23, the out-of-balance condition can be reduced to a minimum which, if the total mass of the plates 22 and the weights 23 is equal to that of the fixed portion, can equate to zero.
