Abstract

1374477 Vehicle buff and draw gear CARDWELL WESTINGHOUSE CO 1 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 50723/71 Heading B7T [Also in Division F2] Buff and draw gear for a railway vehicle coupling comprises rubber pads 52, 54 (Fig. 1), a coil spring 62, and a double-acting hydraulic piston-cylinder shock absorber (Fig. 8). A flow path from one side of the piston 32 of the shock absorber to the other comprises a throttle, formed by a metering rod 86 co-operating with an orifice 82, in series with a spring-biased valve element 262 which opens in response to a certain pressure difference across the piston to open the flow path. Thus, on impacts in buff, a doubleacting check valve 70, communicating with a flexible-walled reservoir 76, closes and there is no flow across the piston until the pressure in front of the piston builds up and displaces the valve element 262 against its spring 266 to uncover passages 84. Should an abnormal pressure build up a pressure relief valve 72 opens. On impacts in draft, when the pressure builds up, the flow is along passages 84, past the opened valve element 262 and through the orifice 82 metered by the rod 86. Draft impacts are cushioned by the rubber pads 52, 54 acting in parallel with the hydraulic shock absorber. When impacts in either direction have lessened, the valve element 262 closes the passages 84 and the shock absorber is urged back to its neutral position by the coil spring 62 or the rubber pads 52, 54, depending on the direction of movement, liquid seeping past the piston 32 to accommodate the changes in volume of the cylinder chambers.
