Abstract

1373911 Testing concrete piles M R MOON 21 Dec 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 45422/70 Heading G1S [Also in Division El] Wires 3, Fig.1, loose in a U-looped sheath 6 stiffened by hoops 7 and surrounded by helical binding 8 are cast into a concrete pile 1 which when set and strong is tensile tested by positioning a thrust unit 10, Fig.2 on top and pulling on the wires by means of an hydraulic jack (not shown). In Fig.4 the wires are replaced by rods 17a, 17b, 18a, 18b coupled at 19, 20, protected by sheaths 6, and secured to sleeves 21, 22 anchored in the cast concrete. In Fig.6 a layer of compressible material 26 such as exfoliated mica is provided to separate upper and lower layers of concrete in a testpile or the layer 26 may be constituted by an oil drum. When tension is applied to the bottom pile section 24 it moves upwardly and provides a measure of the adhesion between the pile face and the surrounding soil.
