Abstract

1373817 Disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 22 June 1972 [23 June 1971 7 Sept 1971] 29354/71 and 41615/71 Heading F2E In a disc brake where two relatively-sliding components (e.g. pad and guide) each provide a "slide" surface, and where sliding of the moving component is eventually prevented (e.g. as a result of lateral brake drag), continued movement of that component in the same direction, but of a non-sliding character, is permitted by rendering one of the surfaces capable of movement. In Figs. 1, 2, a brake pad 11 of a spot-type disc brake has its backing plate 12 notched at 15 to co-operate with guides 14, but the backing plate is spaced (at least laterally) from the guides by two plate springs 16, one at each side of the pad. On actuation in direction 19 towards a disc represented by arrow 20, on subsequent contact with the disc, pad 11 is dragged sideways, whereupon springs 16 may bind against one or other of the guides. But the resulting resistance to continued movement of the pad into closer contact with the disc is nullified by resilient yielding of the plate springs in the direction of the disc. In Figs. 5, 6, slippers 21 riveted to a single plate spring 16 make contact with the guides, while the co-operating surfaces 23, 24 of a slipper and backing plate respectively are inclined. In Figs. 9, 10, for a multiple-sliding-disc brake, splines 43 are secured between two resilient side pieces 42, and the side pieces in turn are secured to a hub or road axle part 41. Flexure of side pieces 42 between screws 46 and the spline ends is permitted by spacers 48 under the heads of screws 46, such flexure providing for axial movement of the splines with braking-surface-providing elements (not shown) when their normal sliding movement along the splines is inhibited by circumferential brake drag. Preferably, each element is associated with its own set of splines.
