1373684 Moulding pipe flanges DOW CHEMICAL CO 14 Feb 1972 6718/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] In a flanged pipe joint in which a synthetic polymeric liner flange 33 is subjected to sealing pressure, the liner flange is anchored against creep by a multiple recessed reinforcement member 34, embedded in flange 33 at its junction with pipe flange 31. Before a projecting end of the liner is moulded to form the flange 33, the member 34 is placed thereover and, as the projecting end is heated, the moulding process forces the polymeric material into the recesses in member 34. The recesses may be formed as concentric grooves in one face of member 34 or, as shown, as perforations formed by punching in sheet steel. Alternatively, the member 34 may be made of rolled and brazed or welded metal mesh. Member 34 may alternatively be made of thermosetting resin or ceramic. The member may be held centred as shown by its inner periphery 35 or by a flange (28, 62), or by contact between its outer periphery and bolts placed in holes (42, Fig. 4, not shown). The member may be in the form of a perforated cone spring washer (55, Fig. 6, not shown). Steel or fibre reinforced polyester pipes may be lined with a fluorinated hydrocarbon, a polyalkene, a polyalkyl acrylate, a polyalkyl methacrylate, a cellulose ester, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloracetate, polyvinyl butyral, p.v.c., styrene, neoprene rubber, nylon, a polycarbonate resin or co-polymers containing styrene or vinylidene chloride.
