Abstract
1373592 Strain gauges ELECTRICAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION Ltd 18 May 1973 [23 May 1972] 24251/72 Heading H1K A method of producing a strain gauge comprises straining an electrically conductive film 2, deposited on an insulating substrate 1, to a sufficient extent to cause crazing of the film and repeating the strain in a cyclic fashion until a steady state is reached in which the electrical resistance of the film varies in the same way with applied strain. To achieve the steady state condition at least fifty cycles are needed, the strain being applied in the same direction, 3, as that of future, in service, strain. The film may be of gold and be vacuum deposited to a thickness of 500 to 1000 nm. upon a substrate of polyurethane rubber. Contact pads 4, also of gold, connect the film to leads 6 via conductive paint or epoxy adhesive 7. The film may be encapsulated after straining to steady state in further polyurethane rubber 8.
