Abstract

1373553 Jacks SOC D' ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES APPLIQUEES 10 Jan 1972 [8 Jan 1971] 1023/72 Heading F1F A fluid operated jack system for controlling flaps 5, 6 at the end of a jet pipe 1 comprises jacks 10, 11 for moving the flaps selectively about their hinges 4, 7, the cylinders, pistons and piston rods of the jacks all having a toroidal shape. The jacks 10, 11 are integrally formed with a bracket 8 hinged at 4 to a fixed extension 3 of pipe 1, the flap 5 also being integral with bracket 8. The piston rod 15 of jack 10 is fixed to the extension 3, and the rod 16 of jack 11 is fixed to flap 6 which is hinged at 7 to the flap 5. The axes of rods 15, 16 form parts of circles having their centres at the hinge points 4 and 7 respectively. Thus by selective pressurization of jacks 10, 11 the inclination of the flaps can be varied to thus vary the cross-section of pipe 1. The jacks 10, 11 can be located on opposite sides of hinge 4 Fig. 3 (not shown) and there is also described a system in which the jacks 10, 11 operate pairs of flaps 5 and 6, Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown) the arrangement being repeated round the pipe circumference to form an essentially circular array of flaps.
