Abstract
1373538 Laying reinforced paving; supporting reinforcement TOR-ISTEG STEEL CORP SAH 13 Oct 1971 [16 Oct 1970 12 Nov 1970] 47725/71 Headings E1G and E1W In a method of constructing a road, runway or railway foundation multi-rib steel reinforcing rods 2 are laid in one or more layers at an oblique angle to the road axis and are then surrounded by concrete or asphalt surfacing. The rods 2 may (as shown) extend from one side to the other of the road whereby the concrete &c may be laid without joints. Alternatively the rods may be coated with bitumen or paper to prevent concrete adherence at desired joint locations. The rods 2 may be straight or curved and may be supplemented by transverse rods 4 oblique or perpendicular to the road axis, some of the intersections being welded. The bars 2, 4 may be dispensed from wheeled or crane-held magazines 5, 6 possibly associated with a paving machine and running on roadside rails 9, 10. In one form of dispenser, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) the rods are held in a hopper (14) and fed one at a time to an outlet slot (22) by a grooved roller (20) geared to the magazine wheels. The ribbed rods may carry undisclosed spacers. In modifications the rods are located at the required height and spacing by stepped or recessed edging strips of concrete, timber asbestos cement, sheet steel, wire or plastics, and such strips may also form shuttering and kerbs for the paving. Fig. 7 shows one such strip in the form of an interlocking block having differentheight recesses 29, 30 for the rod ends. The specification also discloses a grooved edging strip, Fig. 9 (not shown) providing a track for the flanged wheels of construction machinery, and various shapes, Figs. 10-13 (not shown), of wire bolsters for spacing the reinforcing rods from the ground and from each other.
