Abstract

1373407 Hollow box beam A SCHMITTER 2 Nov 1971 [3 Nov 1970 27 Jan 1971] 50949/71 Headings E1G and E1W A hollow box beam for, e.g. a bridge or roof construction, is made from two superimposed elements 1, 2 each at least partly of concrete, connected together along each edge by a concrete layer 9. The lower element 1 may be cast in an open mould with walls extending upwardly from the edges thereof, the upper element 2 being prefabricated and then placed on top of element 1, the layers 9 of concrete then being formed outside the downstanding flanges 4. Reinforcement 8, 10a extends out of the elements 1, 2 respectively into the layers 9, and prestressing cables 11 and 12 are also employed. A bridge deck 13 may be cast on top of the beam (Fig. 2) when further protruding reinforcement 14, 15 is employed. A transverse tie may be used, Fig. 4 (not shown), comprising metal sheet or rods bonded into the bottom of layers 9 at each end. Beams may be arranged side-by-side at differing levels in a bridge construction, Fig. 3 (not shown). For Figures see next page
