Abstract

1373241 Detecting defects in sheet glass CENTRAL GLASS CO Ltd 29 Oct 1971 [31 Oct 1970] 50505/71 Heading G1A In a device for detecting defects in sheet glass a rotary polyhedral mirror 14 causes a laser beam 16 to scan the moving glass sheet transversely of its direction of motion and the transmitted light (or reflected light see Fig.7) is incident on a photo-multiplier 22 after passing via a window W2 and a fibre optic light converger 21. The photo-multipliers output is amplified and passed to a peak value discriminator circuit 32 connected to a reference voltage source so that when the photo-multipliers output decreases below a predetermined voltage level, a pulse appears at the output of the discriminator. The pulses are amplified and passed to a control unit which may activate an alarm. The location of the defects may be determined by determining the relation of the time tl of the defects appearance relative to the scan period T of the laser beam. In another embodiment, Fig.7, light from a laser source 11 is split up into two scanning beams by an oscillating mirror 17, a beam-splitter 19 and mirrors 18, 18', 18", and the beams are directed as shown on to opposite surfaces of the glass sheet 5. The reflected light from each surface is received by a corresponding set of a lens 21 a light filter 24 and a photo-multiplier 22. The photo-multiplier output may then be processed as in the previous embodiment.
