Abstract

1373017 Rotary fluid machines J A MONTEIL 2 Nov 1971 36193/71 Heading F1F In an engine or pump having rotary abutments 4, 4' which have recesses 5, 5' co-operating with teeth 3, the latter are located between axially spaced annular shoulders which define an annular groove G on the periphery of a rotor 2 mounted in a casing 1. To improve sealing, labyrinth leakage paths may be formed by arranging the abutments 4, 4' (Fig. 1) in pairs or larger groups. The rotor 2 and abutments 4, 4' are synchronized by means of co-operating gear teeth. Leakage across the crowns of the teeth 3 is reduced by forming therein axially extending slots which may house sealing strips Figs. 3-5 (not shown) preferably outwardly biased by springs in which case the casing may have a hard wearing lining. The casing surrounding the abutments 4, 4' may also be provided with a plurality of grooves Fig. 7 (not shown), and the abutments provided at each end with a raised annular lip Fig. 2 (not shown). The tooth crown sealing strips may extend across the rotor shoulders and co-operate with a number of annular seals located in grooves in the shoulders, the latter seals each comprising a number of arcuate sections, the two sets of seals forming a network to effectively seal between the shoulders and the casing 1. Alternatively, a number of flexible annular seals j, k, Fig. 6, mounted in the rotor shoulders may be biased by leakage fluid against the side walls of annular chambers h formed in the casing 1. As a further alternative, sealing between the casing 1 and the shoulders of the rotor may be effected by a lattice work of axial and circumferential sealing members located in annular recesses in the casing 1. Such sealing obviates the need for casing endplates, and the rotor may be mounted on its shaft by means of a spider to enable cooling air to pass through the rotor. The shaft may be hollow to receive coolant and the casing may be water jacketed.
