Abstract
1372545 Making containers; stamping AMERICAN FLANGE & MFG CO Inc 5 Oct 1971 [5 April 1971] 46250/71 Headings B3A and B3Q A method of securing a closure flange 1 and a tag ring element 7 to a container wall 90, Fig. 11, in a single punch press operation comprises supporting the element 7 vertically above the flange 1, placing an imperforate container wall between the flange 1 and the element 7, displacing the flange and element towards each other, perforating an opening in the wall 90, and securing the flange and tag ring element about the opening in the container wall. The closure flange 1 is placed in a collar 24, Fig. 2, and the tag ring element 7 is placed in a compression ring 45 mounted on a frame 15. When a pneumatic cylinder 12 is actuated, the frame 15 is driven along rods 20 and, when the frame 15 abuts stop nuts 21, it is in alignment with a flanging punch 53 and perforating punch 72. Continued actuation of the cylinder 12 moves a bracket 33, Fig. 6, relative to the frame 15, thereby pivoting the forked ends of arms 29, 39, away from each other. The arm 29 drives a plunger 27 downwardly and the plunger pushes the flange 1 free from the grip of a ball spring 26 to eject it from the collar 24 on to an anvil 58. The arm 39 drives a plunger 42 upwardly, causing a compression ring 45 to abut a surface 77 on an embossing ring 75 and then to compress springs 46 while lifting the tag ring 7 from the compression ring 45 and placing it within the embossing ring 75. It is retained and oriented in the ring 45 by friction or spring pin arrangements, see Figs. 16-25 (not shown). The frame 15 is then withdrawn and a container wall 90 is positioned on the flanging punch 5, Fig. 11, between the upper and lower die assemblies 70, 50. The die assembly 70 is lowered and a punch 72 punches out a slug to form an opening 91 in the wall 90, Fig. 8 (not shown). The surface 77 pushes the wall 90 against an anvil 59, which moves against springs 62, so that the metal of the wall surrounding the opening 91 and the adjacent tag ring portion are drawn upwardly around the flange body. As the embossing ring 75 reaches the end of its travel it forms an embossment 92 in the wall 90 overlying the flange base and compresses a gasket 6. A portion 80 of the embossing ring bends an outer edge portion 9 of the tag ring over the embossment periphery and a curling anvil 73 bends the uppermost portion of the flange body over the upstanding edges of the tag ring and opening 91 into a tighly closed bead. The tag ring 7 is formed with an octagonal periphery and is provided with holes (10) at each corner of the octagon, Fig. I (not shown), for attaching an identifying tag. It may. be formed with a part-conical neck (107) around its central opening, Fig. 12 (not shown), or it may be flat with a circular outer periphery from which protrude diametrically opposed ears (211) having holes (210), Fig. 23 (not shown).
