Abstract

1372479 Cable burying - trenching apparatus FURUKAWA DENKI KOGYO KK 9 June 1972 [15 Nov 1971 (2) 8 May 1972] 27158/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division H2] A plough-type cable-burying device 1 intended for use in submarine cable laying comprises a steel tubular body 11 which guides the cable 4 into the trench (6) (see Fig. 1). Sledges 13 are secured to the body 11 by brackets 12, and are adapted to remain in constant contact with the ground to stabilize the device 1, the rear lower portion of which comprises a protective blade 15, four cultivating blades 16, 16' which initiate the cut in the trench (6), and a plough-type digging blade 14 having a front digging portion with a sharp knife edge 14a and a soil expelling portion 14b. The cable first passes through cable guide cylinders 18, which are fitted with guide brackets 20 for towing wires 3 which are secured to metal fittings 17. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, horizontal base plates 23 are secured on each side of the tubular body 11, and support pneumatic cylinders 24 extending through the plates 23 and provided at their lower ends with stabilizing sledges 13. Gas under pressure is fed under remote control from gas reservoirs 31 to the cylinders 24 to select the cutting depth of the device or to pull the blades clear of the ground. The digging element 14a is separated from element 14b and pivoted on pin 32 on a centre plate 33 on the lower side of the body 11. A remote controlled motor 35 drives a crank mechanism 34 which causes the element 14a to oscillate back and forwards and thus reduces the dragging force. In order to maintain the attitude of the cutting device such that the minimum strain is put on the cable 4, the dimensions are chosen such that the turning moment M Fig. 9 (not shown) is in the correct direction, or as in Fig. 8 (not shown) a lead weight is provided within the cavity (40) of the hollow expelling element 14b.
