Abstract
1372433 Thermal regenerators R N PENNY 21 Dec 1972 [31 Dec 1971] 60894/71 Heeding F4K [Also in Division FI] In a thermal regenerator having a disctype matrix 3 mounted for rotation within a housing 1, 2, the matrix is surrounded by an annular bearing ring formed by interengaging arcuate blocks 16, 17 of two different materials, e.g. a metal and a ceramic, the blocks being supported from housing liners 14, 15 by couplings 18 which permit limited radial and circumferential movement of the blocks relative to the liners 14, 15. Hollow walls 4 and 5 carrying bar-like seals 10, 11 separate the heat exchange fluids (e.g. compressed air and turbine exhaust gases) upstream and downstream of the matrix. Compressed air from passage 6 enters wall 4 via a port 23 and from there flows via a passage 19 behind the seal 10 and grooves (31, 32, Fig. 4) to an annular passage 25 surrounding the bearing ring. The ring is formed with nozzles 26 which direct the air into sawtooth-shaped depressions 27 formed in the rim 13 of the matrix and so effect rotation of the matrix. Spent air leaves through a bleed duct 28 and passes via the passage 20 behind the bar seal 11 to the wall 5 from which it rejoins the heated air stream in chamber 8 via a port 24. In alternative embodiments the arcuate blocks 16, 17 may be replaced by pairs of bearing blocks (33, 34, Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) arranged side-by-side and end-to-end between the annu- lar liners 14 and 15. The matrix can be rotated by means of a drive shaft on which it is mounted.
