Abstract

1372374 Coated sheet material WEYERHAEUSER CO 24 Nov 1971 [30 Nov 1970] 54654/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A coating formed of a film of a polymerisable material that is curable by exposure to ionizing radiation is cured by exposing the film to ionizing radiation in the presence of oxygen which inhibits the cure of the surface layer of the film and thereafter exposing the film to ultraviolet light to advance the state of cure of the surface layer. In the Examples coatings comprising n-butyl acrylate, a vinyl ester resin prepared from the half-ester condensation product of 2-hydroxylethyl acrylate and maleic anhydride and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, glycidyl acrylate benzoin, a vinyl ester resin prepared from the helf-ester condensation product of 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate and maleic anhydride and butanediol diglycidyl ether, titanium dioxide, talc, an unsaturated polyester resin dissolved in vinyl toluene and a resin prepared from polypropylene glycol, tolylene diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate are applied to hardboard siding, plywood, metal foil, carton board and overlayed plywood, and irradiated with an electron beam and then exposed to a quartz mercury-arc lamp or an infra-red lamp.
