Abstract
1,241,851. Coating. CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc. 12 Jan., 1970 [27 Jan., 1969], No. 1438/70. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Substrates, e.g. of metal, paper or plastics, are coated by applying thereto, e.g. by dipping, spraying or roll coating a film of ethylenically unsaturated ester having a /3-hydroxyl group prepared by the reaction of a polyepoxide having at least 2 epoxide groups and an α, # unsaturated monocarboxylic acid of 3-7 C atoms and exposing the film to a source of ionising radiation, e.g. U.V., electron bombardment, to effect polymerisation of the polyester film. Suitable acids are acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, isocrotonic, tiglic, angelic and senecioic acid. The epoxide may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, saturated or unsaturated, heterocyclic or substituted and a variety are specified. The U.V. source is preferably a low pressure mercury discharge tube in quartz producing a wavelength of 4000-8000Š at 100 watts/in to which the film is exposed for 1-30 seconds. Bombardment with electrons of energy of at least 100,000 c.v. at 0.1-10 megarads may also be employed, preferably in vacuo or inert atmosphere. Cans may be formed from the thus coated metal.
