Abstract
1372073 Automatic control of arc furnaces UNION CARBIDE CORP 5 Oct 1971 [5 Oct 1970] 46211/71 Heading G3R The current in a submerged arc furnace is maintained at an optimum value by generating a control signal in dependence on measured current and electrode position, and using the signal to adjust the electrode within a given range. As shown, calcium carbide is produced in a furnace 302 with at least one hollow electrode 301 around which is packed a mixture of lime and carbon reducing material. Further reactants are supplied through the electrode to the reaction zone 303. The electrode current is continuously measured and combined with pre-set tolerance and current reference values to produce a signal which causes hydraulic pistons 307 to adjust the electrode position by small increments. The electrode tip position, which may be sensed by thermocouples, is compared with upper and lower limits, and if out of range, the reference current signal is modified, and the reactant feed is controlled until the position is again in the desired range. Electrode consumption is measured as a function of power generation and determines electrode slip using bands 310, 312 energized hydraulically. The current reference value is reduced during slip intervals. The temperature at a tap hole 309 is sensed by a pyrometer to give an indication of carbide quality, and deviations of the quality from a pre-determined value are corrected by regulation of reactant feed. Coolant water flow and pressure are sensed by meters 329, 330, 331 which actuate alarms if pre-set values are exceeded.
