1372041 Grinding D E GRETTON 17 May 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 39162/71 Heading B3D [Also in Division B2] An apparatus for performing work operations on articles 28 comprises a rotary carrier 6, 7 adapted to rotatably receive articles to be worked and to present them sequentially to a work station, a rotary tool 25 at the work station adapted to engage each article in turn, and drive means 15 for rotating each article in turn relative to the carrier and tool. The apparatus may be used to apply paint or other coatings to articles of wood or similar material but, as described, is for shaping fishing floats from balsa wood, cork or rigid foamed plastics materials. The carrier consists of spaced wheels 47 mounted on a shaft 8 rotatable in bearings 9 secured to a base 5. The wheels are formed with notches 10 in their peripheries for receiving the spindles of the float blanks. A retainer member 12 is disposed adjacent each wheel 6, 7 and each member is of arcuate form having a larger radius than that of the wheels to form a nip at the work station. Each wheel has a radially extending projection which engages a groove 3 on its associated retaining member. The drive means consists of a disc 15 which has a surface of friction material, such as sponge rubber faced with hard rubber, and is rotatable on the shaft 8 between the carrier wheels by an electric motor or the like. The tool consists of a paint roller and dip tray or, as shown, a shaped drum 25 which has an abrasive covering and is mounted on a shaft 26 carried by bearings on slide blocks mounted in the retaining members 12. The float blanks are fed by a hopper to the carrier wheels and are guided laterally by rails 80, 80a, as they are carried to the nip between the wheels and drum, the blanks being rotated on the carrier wheels by the disc 15. In another embodiment, the friction disc 15 is replaced by a belt (60, Fig. 3, not shown) driven over rollers (61...64) and having a surface of friction material.
