Abstract

1371999 Electro-phoretic gel apparatus R M ROBERTS and J S JONES 28 April 1972 [4 June 1971] 19795/72 Heading C7B Electro-phoretic apparatus comprises two buffer solution containers and the zone between contains an electro-phoretic gel. One of the containers is provided with a semi-permeable membrane communicating with the gel. Containers 24 and 28 are held together by spring clips and are separated by a spacer 30 defining a cavity for the gel. The spacer is sealed by bands, beads or gaskets 72, 76. Walls 34 and 38 are formed with internal channels 80 for circulation of a heating or cooling liquid. Electrode 102 may be connected to terminal 108 by lead line 104. Wall 34 may contain a slot (not shown) provided with a dialysis membrane. Wall 38 is provided with a depression at the top to allow the buffer solution in container 28 to make electrical contact with the gel. The gel, which may be a synthetic polyacrylamide, is introduced as a solution. When it is setting a comblike pocket former may be pressed into the gel to produce a series of impressions suitable for accommodating samples for electrophoretic analysis. The apparatus may be made of a transparent plastics material.
