Abstract

<PICT:1021287/C6-C7/1> A vertical gel electrophoresis apparatus includes an upper tank 18, Fig. 2, and a lower tank 16 containing buffer solution, a vertical passageway 24 containing a gel in communication with each tank, and an electrode 20, 22 in each tank, an internal drain tube 72 extending from the upper tank 18, external tubular connections 36, 66 establishing liquid communication between the two tanks and a pump 74 for recirculating buffer solution from the lower tank to the upper tank, the solution then draining back to the lower tank. Coolant passages 28, 52 are provided on either side of the gel 24. A slot 125, shown closed by a plug 27, allows a sample of a complex substance which is to undergo electrophoresis to be inserted into the gel between the ends thereof. The apparatus is built up from an outer and an inner assembly, 12 and 14, Fig. 1 (not shown), both electrodes being carried by the inner assembly 14 and connected by insulated wires 21, 23 to a bipolar connector. Clamping straps 46, 48, 68 on the assemblies 12, 14 allow them to be held together by a suitable clamp.
