Abstract

1371872 Felting needle H J SCHMAUSER 1 June 1972 [12 June 1971] 25673/72 Heading D1R A felting needle has a cross section in which the longitudinal axis is greater than the transverse axis, preferably at least 4, e.g. 5 to 7 times greater. Such needles are used to needle continuously moving webs. They are mounted in a needle board with their longitudinal axes parallel to the direction of motion of the web, thereby offering maximum resistance to bending forces and minimising the disturbance to any refinforcing warp threads. The piecing end may be tapered and may terminate in a point or in a groove. Notches and/or downwardly pointing barbs are situated on the two edges to which the longitudinal axes extend. Preferably the notches/barbs are disposed alternatively along the two edges. The sides of the needle may also carry notches/barbs, as may the sides and edges of the tapered portion. The notches/barbs may be ground, milled or stamped.
