Abstract
1371708 Making metal postage stamps M BOCCARD 26 April 1972 [27 April 1971] 19248/72 Heading B3A A postage stamp is made from a precious metal by laminating a metal sheet using rolling mills, cutting the resulting sheet to size, beating the cut sheets with hand hammers which are moved in a dovetail-shaped pattern, coating the sheets with gum, and finally stamping the sheets into postage stamps. The initial sheet may be formed from an ingot of gold, silver or platinum, and additions of copper or nickel may be added to produce a desired colour. In an example, the laminated sheet is cut into sheets 10 cm. square, the sheets being interleaved with paper and then beaten. After beating the sheet thickness is from 0À5 to 0À20 mm. The sheets are coated with gum by applying gummed paper to their reverse sides, and the sheets are finally stamped and perforated.
