Abstract

1371452 Coarse silica aggregates W R GRACE & CO 22 June 1972 [23 June 1971] 29282/72 Heading C1A Particulate silica aggregates of primary particle size 200-500 mÁ are made by either (1) mixing an alkalimetal silicate aqueous solution with an ammoniated aqueous solution of formic, acetic, propionic or carbonic acid at a pH of 9À9 to 11 or (2) mixing the silicate solution, ammoniated to a pH of from 10-11À5 with a solution of formic, acetic or propionic acid in an alcohol so as to produce said aggregates which may be washed, dried and deaggregated in a fluid energy mill. Preferred alcohols for use in process (2) above are ethanol, a propanol, a butanol, a pentanol or a hexanol.
