Abstract

1371417 Detection of Neisseria gonorrheae UNITED STATES PACKAGING CORP 21 Aug 1972 [29 Oct 1971 38825/72 Heading G1B [Also in Division A5] A test assembly for use in detecting Neisseria gonorrheae comprises tube 10 of transparent plastic having flexible side walls and a closed end, a dry pledget 12 in the tube and impregnated with a compound which reacts with Neisseria gonorrheae to produce a colour change and a frangible ampul 14 in the tube and containing a liquid in which the compound is soluble. The liquid may be water, physiological saline or aqueous buffer solution pH 6.5 to 7.2. The compound reactive with Neisseria gonorrheae may be a phenylene diamine; N, N, N'N' tetramethyl para diamine dihydrochloride is exemplified. In use of the assembly, a specimen to be tested is collected on swab 18, cap 16 is removed from tube 10, swab 18 is inserted into the tube and the cap replaced. Tube 10 is squeezed to break ampul 14 and simultaneously cap 16 is forced down to bring the swab into contact with the liquid. The assembly includes swab 18 with plastics handle 20 for collecting a specimen to be tested. Tube 10 and the packaged swab are packed together.
