Abstract
1370702 Air cooled heat exchangers HUDSON PRODUCTS CORP 22 May 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 24027/72 Heading F4S [Also in Division F1] In a heat exchanger in which a process fluid to be cooled flows through tubes 16 across which air is passed by an axial-flow fan assembly to cool said fluid, the fan assembly comprises a pair of impellers 19, 20 mounted coaxially within a fan ring and close together, the blades of impeller 19 having a positive pitch which is non- adjustable during rotation, and the blades of impeller 20 being adjustable by remotely operable means within a range between positive pitches greater than and less than the positive pitch of the blades of impeller 19. The supply of power fluid from a conduit 31 for adjusting the pitch is controlled by a transducer 30 in accordance with the temperature of a fluid being cooled in the tubes 16 by the fan. The impeller 19 may be adjustable in pitch when stationary. At design flow, the impeller 20 is adjusted to a positive pitch greater than that of impeller 19. Reduction of the pitch of impeller 20 below that of impeller 19 will usually not reduce the air flow, which is then determined by the pitch of impeller 19, until the pitch of impeller 20 is reduced to a negative value. By reducing the pitch of impeller 20 to a negative value greater than the positive value of the pitch of impeller 19, the air flow may be reversed. A further adjustable-pitch impeller may be provided downstream of the impeller 20. Instead, an impeller identical to the impeller 19 but adjusted to a greater pitch may be provided between the impellers 19, 20. The blades of the second and third impellers may be circumferentially offset relative to those of the respective immediately preceding impeller to avoid the most turbulent part of the air stream.
