Abstract
1370526 Development of electrostatic latent images AUSTRALIA DEPARTMENT OF SUPPLY SECRETARY OF 23 March 1972 [25 March 1971] 13752/72 Heading G2H A liquid developer for electro-photographic images, of the kind comprising a dispersion of toner particles in a liquid carrier, is so constituted as to be neutral between positive and negative working, and to be turnable towards either of these by addition of an appropriate control agent. The developer comprises a paste of toner particles, such as carbon black, a metalorganic pigment, an inor or an organic pigment, with a resin coating insoluble in the liquid carrier, and is suspended in a carrier liquid with a resistivity in excess of 10<SP>10</SP>ohm. centimetre and a dielectric constant less than three. The carrier liquid may be a hydrocarbon, and the paste may include white spirit, methylene chloride, methyl ethyl ketone or dodecanol. A positive pigment, such as carbon black or copper phthalocyanine blue, may be milled with a strongly negative resin such as pentacrythritol resin or ethylhydroxy ethyl cellulose to produce the paste. Conversion of the neutral developer to positive development of a negatively charged image is brought about by addition of a material which wets the coated toner particles and dissolves in the carrier liquid. This material may be oleic acid, napthenic acid, zirconiumoctoate, an alkyd resin or a chlorinated diphenyl. Alternatively negative development may be brought about by addition of an organic oil. After one of these materials has been applied as a control agent to effect development, the developer may be returned to neutrality, or even the opposite sign. A developed image may be continuously scanned. For example in colour development, and the developer modified automatically to correct the density of the image. Preferably the developer is used with a zinc oxide paper, comprising particles of photo-conductive zinc oxide in a film of insulating alkyd resin, bearing a negative charge image, but the zinc oxide may be replaced by selenium or a member of the sulphur group.
