Abstract
1370217 Welding by fusion ESAB Ltd 16 June 1972 [17 June 1971] 28286/72 Heading B3R In a method of are welding, a welding arc is established between a welding electrode 22 and a workpiece 17, 18, a wire or strip of filler metal 21 is preheated by passing an electric current from a source 25 via spaced contact members 23, 24 through the strip or wire which is fed into the fusion zone by advancing mechanism 20. The method may be employed in TIG welding, Fig. 1 (not shown), building up parts by deposition, Fig. 4 (not shown), or, as shown, submerged arc welding wherein flux is introduced by a nozzle 19 which moves from right to left in front of and with the electrode 22. A backing element 16 of copper provides a groove 16a and is protected from the arc by the interposition of the strip or wire 21. In the building up of parts by deposition embodiment the heated strip is guided to the workpiece surface by an electrical contact block which has cooling fins. Automatic control of feed and temperature variation may be provided.
