Abstract
1322371 Welding by fusion ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA JUKOGYO KK 8 July 1970 [12 Jan 1970] 33134/70 Heading B3R In a "firecracker" type submerged arc welding process, a consumable electrode assembly 1 comprising a bundle of naked metal wires is laid in and along a V-section weld preparation groove between workpiece components 2, 3, spaced from said components by electrically insulating spacers 4 and covered by flux 5, and welding current is fed to the electrode assembly through successively operative electrode assembly retaining and contact members 7, whereby an arc is generated and traverses along the electrode assembly from one end thereof, and the electrode assembly is so composed and disposed that the angle included, in cross-section, between tangents on respective sides of the assembly facing the groove walls and common to outermost surfaces of the electrode wires on each side of the assembly, is not more than, and preferably less than, the corresponding angle included by the groove walls, whereby, with suitable cross-sectional dimensions of the electrode assembly in relation to those of the groove and with suitable welding current, the arc may be concentrated at the bottom of the groove and a penetration bead formed. The weld preparation groove may or may not include a workpiece gap. Parameters providing successful penetration beads are detailed with reference to Figs. 4a-4c, 5, 6j, 6k, 7m, 7n, and 8p (not shown). In such a process, the spacers 4 are of an organic substance having a non-hygroscopic property, and the burning of a fuse 8 positioned about 50 mm. ahead of each contact member 7 effects, through switching means 9, circuit breaking release of the contact member away from said assembly and energization of the following contact member to take up current feed. The flux may be a fused type, a sintered type or a mixture thereof. A grooved copper backing bar may be applied to the workpiece either directly or through glass tape.
