Abstract
1,157,284. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 26 Oct., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 49181/65. Heading B3R. In vertical welding, e.g. electroslag or electrogas, in which an electrode wire is fed through a consumable guide nozzle 26 located in a gap between the workpieces 22, 23, the melt being retained by shoes 24, 25, the nozzle 26 is spaced and insulated from the workpieces 22, 23 and the shoes 24, 25 by spacers 10, each comprising a metal member at least partially coated with an insulating layer, the spacers 10 being temporarily attached to the nozzle 26. The attachment is by adhesive gate 27 or where the spacers include a magnetic component, the attachment may be due to the magnetic effect of the welding current passing through the nozzle 26. The spacers may be rods coated with flux. The coating may be thinner or non-existent on one side of the rods. Alternatively, the spacer may be a flat or corrugated strip coated on one or more sides with flux. The strip may be grooved to provide a key for the flux. The metal part or the flux of the spacers may include alloying agents. The nozzle 26 as shown is of multi-core construction as described in Specification 1,155,015.
